A Message from Father Elias

No Child's Soul Left Behind

My Dear Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I have paraphrased a popular political statement that has been at the forefront when the education of our children is talked about. Summer has come to an end and all our children have returned to their classrooms. I would like to stress an important aspect of their education that should not be neglected. So, I put into the same context as their education in the school system, what I believe to be an important aspect of their education that is left out. We talk about no child being left behind and refer to all the academic disciplines, but seem to pass over what a child should be after all of these disciplines have been taught. We want our children to be able to compete and be successful, which is wonderful, but let us not forget to also want them to be children of God living according to His example.

Our children are being taught things more complex and advanced and at an earlier age. They become overwhelmed and stressed because of the pressure that is placed on them. We forget to bring into their life the balancing factor, calmness and purpose that comes from growing in the faith and knowledge of our Lord. The nurturing of their souls needs to be emphasized and considered in a complete education process. Prayer, studying and reading scripture,a nd service to Church, school and community are all parts of the curriculum that need to be included. Let us set aside some time with our children to pray together each day, to read and discuss the Bible for an hour or two each week. Decide together on projects for them to do individually and together, with us as parents, at our church, school and in the community. Stress the importance of learning, but impress upon them that they can better themselves to better help others around them. They can succeed by not only making and building wealth, but by helping and teaching those aroundthem as well.

No child should be ignored and each needs to feel special and loved. We need to acknowledge, hug and congratulate them, not only for heir worldly accomplishments, but for those that Christ has set before us. Let no child's soul be left behind.

In His love and Service,

† Fr. Elias
